To Niche, or Not to Niche?

How To Use Social Media For Health Coaches

The biggest mistake I made when first starting out as a Health Coach, was that I was too much of a generalist and didn’t define my health coach niche.

I wanted to help everyone get healthy.

While a healthier diet and lifestyle could theoretically improve the lives of just about anyone and everyone, it will be an uphill battle to really grow your business.

Why?

When you’re speaking to everyone, you end up speaking to no one, as Marie Forleo, would say.

People Don’t Seek Health Coaches, They Seek Solutions to Their Problems

Most people want to improve their health, but aren’t generally looking for a health coach. Instead, they are looking for a solution to a problem they have.

Someone is overweight and wants to lose weight.

Someone has high blood pressure and they’d like to bring it down naturally.

Someone is chronically bloated and wants to fix it.

So, while a health coach should be able to help ALL of these people, it’s unlikely that all, or even any of them will sign up for your coaching if you don’t specifically address their problem.

If you specialize in weight loss though, you’ll have a better chance of snagging the first example as a client.

If you specialize in improving heart health through dietary changes, you’ll more easily score the second example as a client.

And if you’re the expert in bloating, well then the third example is more likely to sign up with you.

The Problem with Generalizations

Put yourself in the shoes of any of those above examples - if you want to lose weight, would you rather go to a general health coach or a weight loss health coach?

If you help all people with all things, your language and marketing will become general and watered down. You’ll be forever racking your brain about what to post on social or your blog.

You won’t necessarily come top of mind when someone develops a specific issue and is seeking help. So, as tempting as it is to help all people with all things, choose a niche and a target market and stick to it.

The Power of Choosing A Health Coach Niche

When you choose a specific health coach niche and target market, you’ll never run out of ideas for what to post. Think of how much clearer your messaging will be to potential clients.

So in answer to the question? Definitely niche down. I wish I would have done it sooner!
